Iona is steeped in Christian History. With the arrival of St Columba in AD 563 and the founding of the Abbey, Iona is regarded as the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland. Over a century ago, the Abbey and monastic buildings were restored. In 1938, The Iona Community was founded to continue the tradition of worship in the Abbey through daily services and teaching. Today, Iona remains a place of pilgrimage and spirituality. Enjoy a free-flow visit of the Abbey and see the cloisters, the graveyard (the burial site of numerous early Scottish, Irish and French kings) and the impressive collection of over 180 medieval carved stones and crosses. Enjoy free time to soak up the atmosphere of the Abbey, as well as to explore the lovely little shops and cafes of the village.
Please note: A visit to the island includes a zodiac ride to a beach or pier. Warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended. The Expedition Team will advise your booked included experience departure time onboard and will try to accommodate your booked optional excursions or optional expeditions accordingly. If a timing conflict occurs guests should anticipate to participate on their booked optional experience or optional expedition and forgo the included experience.
