Step into the brooding beauty of Orkney through the lens of Ann Cleeves’ ‘The Killing Stones’ on this atmospheric literary tour, where ancient history and modern mystery intertwine.
Depart the ship and drive through Kirkwall town. Hear stories of the Ba', Orkney's famous street game, whose fierce loyalty, inherited rivalries, and deep local roots play an important role in Cleeves' gripping murder mystery. Head into the east of the Mainland, Orkney’s largest island. Stop at Hurtiso viewpoint, showcasing the atmospheric seascape of Scapa Flow and the Churchill Barriers; where history, war, and engineering reshape the sea itself.
From here, travel on the coach to the Standing Stones of Stenness. Rising starkly on the open landscape, this circle and henge is thought to be the earliest henge monument in the British Isles.
Continue on the coach to the pretty fishing village of Stromness. Visit the beautifully refurbished Pier Arts Centre with exhibitions by both local and international artists. Take a moment to reflect, while enjoying this important collection of British fine art. Stop at a nearby venue for light refreshments.
Travel to Maeshowe, the finest Neolithic building to survive in north-west Europe. Explore the monumental, chambered cairn, whose narrow stone passage and hidden chambers echo the novel’s atmosphere of secrecy and buried truths.
Re-join the coach and depart for Kirkwall to reboard the ship.
