Leave the pier on foot to walk past the new Kilden Performing Arts Center.
Your destination is Odderøya. This island was once a naval base and has a very interesting military history. Today, the remnants of its ramparts, a gunpowder store, a quarantine hospital and other 18th-century buildings serve as reminders of its important past.
Take in the views of the eastern harbor, Christiansholm Fortress and the pleasure-boat marina as you negotiate the hilly and undulating Kjærlighetsstien (lovers' track) around the island. You will stop en route for refreshments of coffee and a pastry or waffle -- the café is housed in the former residence of the garrison engineer and is located on the southern tip of the island. It offers a fantastic view of the fjord and two lighthouses.
Suitably refreshed, you will start your hike past the remains of the Odderøya Fortress and head back to the ship.
