All aboard! A step back in time awaits you on this half-day road-and-rail adventure.
Set out by coach, traveling through Kristiansand and turning inland. You'll pass through typical woodland scenery dotted with lakes, low hills, and farms, and the small industrial town of Vennesla.
Near the shores of Venneslafjord — a freshwater lake — you will reach Grovane Station. A favorite regional snack of toast and apple juice is served here.
Trade your coach for a carriage on the vintage Setesdal Railway, which opened in 1896 to link Kristiansand with the Setesdal Valley. It closed in 1962 but has been partially reopened as a heritage railway, operating on a scenic five-mile (8 km) stretch from Grovane to Røyknes.
Powered by a steam engine dating back to 1894, this short but very special train ride recreates the atmosphere of a turn-of-the-century railway journey. The narrow-gauge track follows the banks of the Otra River, crossing bridges and dams, and passing through tunnels and avalanche shelters.
Keep your camera ready for this lovely adventure in southern Norway.
