Cross under the River Mersey and travel via the Mersey Tunnel as you leave Liverpool on a panoramic drive. Cross Horseshoe Pass in northeast Wales. Rugged mountains and the Vale of Clywd lead you to Llangollen -- a small village in the Dee Valley. This location is famed for its annual International Eisteddfod festival of folk music, costumes, and dance. In Llangollen, you have some free time to browse in the village shops. Don’t miss the 14th-century stone bridge, considered one of Wales' great picture-postcard scenes. Board the Llangollen Railway for a picturesque seven-mile ride along the banks of the River Dee to Carrog. The restored steam locomotive pulls a train of vintage 1960s passenger cars. A delicious Welsh lunch is served at a local hotel nestled among magnificent scenery in the Vale of Llangollen. From there, it’s a short drive to Chirk Castle. Now owned by the National Trust, this country home was originally built as a Marcher stronghold by Edward I (the Marcher Lords were the Norman-English nobles who held lands in Wales in the Middle Ages). Adam's Tower boasts a magnificent dungeon and original 13th-century military features, including two ‘murder holes’. Tour the interior of the Castle and its fine gardens, and don’t miss the playful topiary garden before you return to Liverpool.
