Set off from the fishing port of Lerwick, founded in the 17th century, viewing the Town Hall before turning west toward the tiny town of Scalloway -- the original capital and second-largest settlement on the island.
View from the outside the now roofless Scalloway Castle, built around 1600 by the tyrant Earl Patrick Stewart. He used forced labor to build his residence and was executed in Edinburgh in 1615.
Check out the fascinating local museum, with a special display devoted to the Shetland Bus -- the boats that traveled between Shetland and Norway, helping the Norwegian Resistance movement during World War II. If you prefer, wander through Scalloway's Main Street and view the picturesque waterfront and colorful houses.
Leaving Scalloway, you'll travel through the Tingwall Valley with its Norse heritage; visiting a herd of Shetland ponies en route. Learn about the history and characteristics of this small and hardy pony directly from a local breeder.
Heading north through Girlsta and Weisdale, you'll visit the Shetland Jewelry Workshop to see how beautifully handcrafted jewelry is designed and made. Would leaving without a piece be a crime? You decide, knowing that you have the means, motive and opportunity to make a purchase.
Please note: Scalloway Castle is undergoing restoration; scaffolding may be present. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
