Departing from Lerwick, drive North-west towards Tresta – home of the Breckenlea Shetland Pony Stud.
En route take in the dramatic landscape of Shetland with its rolling hills and the spectacular views from the Scord of Weisdale Viewpoint.
On arrival at Breckenlea Pony Stud guests will be welcomed by local owner Amanda and get to meet her stud of prize-winning miniature Shetland Ponies. All have been shown to a very high standard, achieving Champion, and Reserve Champion status in Shetland, Scotland, and England. There will also be the chance to pet this year’s new friendly foals.
Amanda and her family also own and breed Shetland Sheepdogs, most of whom have been born in Shetland. Two of their current dogs have recently qualified for Crufts, the first Shetland Sheepdogs to qualify since 1912!
On site, there are a flock of pure Shetland Sheep, which come in an array of beautiful colours. Guests will get up close, take pictures and may even have the opportunity to hold a lamb. Amanda also has some Shetland sheep wool in various stages, from raw to spun, and there may be some available to purchase.
During the panoramic drive back to Lerwick, stop to enjoy a hot cup of tea/coffee and some delicious home bakes in the Herrislea Hotel, a unique country house located in the heart of the Shetland Islands.
