Exciting, exhilarating, memorable -- welcome to Expedition Experiences by Seabourn. Zodiac, kayaking or hiking activities enable you to experience the wonders of nature up close; in-depth cultural, ethnographic and archaeological discoveries connect you to the human and natural history of Seabourn's world. Each Expedition is expertly planned, professionally operated, and escorted by skilled expedition staff.
Kerrera Island, four miles long and a mile wide, lies just one mile due west of Oban. Its 34 inhabitants are mostly descendants of Clan MacDougall, who built Gylen Castle here in 1582. The castle was besieged and burned down during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. This is also the place where Alexander II of Scotland died in 1249. Cruise through the Sound of Kerrera to see the southern end of Kerrera Island and see the ruins of Gylen Castle. Its towers jut dramatically skyward and are best be viewed from the water. Sheep farms abound and the rocky shoreline makes for interesting seabird habitat. Keep an eye out for seals, sea eagles and dolphins along the way.
Please note: You will not step ashore on Kerrera Island. Tour departs from and returns to the ship. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. A waterproof and windproof outer layer can be provided upon request. Wear sunglasses and biodegradable sunscreen. Bring binoculars. There are steps to negotiate when (dis)embarking the Zodiac, with assistance offered. Tour generally operates rain or shine but may be canceled in the event of extremely bad weather or unsuitable conditions. Minimum age is 6 years.
