Enjoy a walking tour around Plymouth Hoe on your way to visit to The Royal Citadel, a dramatic 17th century fortress which was built in the late 1660s. Commanding a prominent position high up on Plymouth Hoe, looking out over the Sound and into the Channel and Western Approaches, The Royal Citadel was built to defend the British Coastline from the Dutch and encompasses the earlier fort that was built in the times of Sir Francis Drake. Today, The Royal Citadel is still an operational military base and houses the 29 Commando Regiment Royall Artillery. During your private guided visit learn about the 350-years’ worth of stories that the fortress has to tell. Following this fascinating visit, take a scenic walk back to the Barbican and your awaiting ship.
Please note: All guests are required to produce a valid photo ID (Passport, ID card, Driver's License) which must match the name on the ticket. All bags will be subject to search and in most cases there will be a handheld metal detector body search. Large bags are not permitted. Due to the current security regulations on the Military Base, no photography is permitted, and all recording devices are prohibited. No liquid over 100ml or unsealed liquids of any size are permitted on site. Once the tour begins guests cannot leave due to security reasons. As this is a working Military Base the tour may be cancelled at short notice. Distance walked is roughly 2 ½ miles. Walking will take place on streets of pavement and cobblestone with inclines and steps.
