Plymouth is the gateway to the Dartmoor National Park -- home to more than 30,000 people, including the farmers and foresters who work the land for their livelihood. Dartmoor is justly famous for its wide-open moors, wooded valleys, rushing rivers and wildlife. Its scenery is dominated by rugged tors and outcroppings of granite formed around 280 million years ago. Leaving Plymouth, enjoy a panoramic drive through this vast wilderness steeped in legend and myth. Heading into the heart of Dartmoor, pass the Victorian prison at Princetown and pause for photographs (traffic permitting) at Two Bridges, a renowned beauty spot beside the West Dart River, before continuing to Buckfast Abbey.
Buckfast Abbey is home to a community of Benedictine monks and possess a fascinating history. Enjoy exploring Buckfast Abbey at your own free-flow pace. There is a video presentation and small exhibition explaining the monks’ achievement and their present-day work. Admire the fine examples of stained glass that adorn the Abbey. Outside, enjoy a stroll through the Lavender, Physic and Sensory gardens or perhaps browse the Abbey shop for Buckfast Abbey fudge, hand-made in the monastery kitchens.
At the end of the visit, re-join the coach for the return to Plymouth.
Please note: Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
