During a scenic drive, discover some of the city’s maritime highlights and learn more about the fascinating history of Plymouth before continuing to Buckland Abbey. It was from Plymouth that the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for the New World, The Endeavour began its voyage of discovery, and where Sir Francis Drake, the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe, set sail to defeat the Spanish Armada.
Visit Buckland Abbey which holds the secret to over 700 years of history. Originally a Cistercian monastery it was converted after the dissolution of the monasteries to become the home of Sir Richard Grenville and then, most famously, Sir Francis Drake. The Abbey remained a Drake family home and the center of a large farm estate for nearly four hundred years after the death of Sir Francis in 1596. Today the Abbey is part museum and part house, and its rich history is reflected in the furnished period rooms and museum galleries. After visiting the house, step outside to discover the Great Barn, one of the largest medieval barns remaining in the country and enjoy a stroll around the beautiful gardens which stretch down to the river Tavy.
