Depart Portsmouth today on a leisurely tour to Exbury Gardens to enjoy the largest privately-owned gardens in the country. Exbury is home to the world-famous Rothschild Collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias, as well as rare trees and shrubs. You will also visit the bustling and historic village of Lyndhurst, regarded as the capital of the New Forest.
Exbury Gardens were created by Lionel de Rothschild in the 1920s -- 200 acres of natural beauty. A member of the team welcomes you and introduces you to the garden. A narrow-gauge steam train ride takes you on a delightful journey around the northeast corner and through the Summer Lane garden planted with bulbs, herbaceous perennials and grasses.
Enjoy a delicious lunch here before rejoining a drive to Lyndhurst.
Historical records first mention Lyndhurst in AD 980 and again in the Doomsday Survey of 1086. In 1099, William the Conqueror designated this area his nova forestra -- New Forest -- and it stretched from the River Avon in the west to Southampton Water in the east and from the Wiltshire downs in the north to The Solent in the south. Today, a little smaller, it is known as New Forest National Park. Lyndhurst itself began its life as a royal hunting lodge. After some free time to explore here, you'll reboard the coach and drive back to Portsmouth.
Please note: Terrain includes gravel paths, inclines and steps.
