Discover one of Northern Ireland’s most dramatic landscapes at Downhill Demesne, a windswept headland offering panoramic views across the North Coast and beyond. Part of the Binevenagh Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this iconic location combines breathtaking scenery with a rich architectural heritage.
Your half-day guided excursion begins with a walk through the landscaped grounds of the Demesne, created in the 18th century by the flamboyant and eccentric Earl Bishop Fredrick Hervey. Here, history and nature intertwine—once a grand estate adorned with treasures from across Europe, the house now stands in evocative ruins, hinting at its former glory.
As you explore, discover remarkable features such as the Lion’s Gate, the Gothic Bishop’s Gate, and the double-walled garden with its original Dovecote and Ice House. Many of these structures are listed with the Historic Places Trust, reflecting their architectural and historical significance.
The highlight of your visit is a private tour inside Mussenden Temple, perched dramatically on the cliff edge. Built as a library and modeled on the Temple of Vesta in Italy, this striking structure was dedicated to Hervey’s cousin, Frideswide Mussenden. Today, it remains one of the most photographed landmarks in Northern Ireland—a testament to both beauty and resilience.
All too soon, you’ll leave this spectacular corner of the Antrim Coast and return to Portrush and your awaiting ship.
Please Note: This tour involves walking over slightly undulating terrain and is not suitable for guests using wheelchairs or those with walking difficulties.
