Founded by the Romans as a thermal spa, Bath became an important center of the wool industry in the Middle Ages. In the 18th century, under George III, it developed into an elegant town with neo-Classical Palladian buildings, which blend harmoniously with the Roman baths.
The elegant city of Bath, with its stately, honey-colored Georgian architecture, nestles amid rolling English countryside. Rightfully, it claims a place among England's most beautiful places to visit. The Romans transformed Bath into England's first spa resort, and it was revived as a chic spa town in the 18th century.
A 2½ panoramic drive from Portland brings you to Bath, where you will admire the charming Pulteney Bridge. Completed in 1774, this is the only bridge in England with shops on both sides, featuring three arches and a central Venetian window.
Don't miss the sweeping Royal Crescent, easily one of the most beautiful streets in all of England. Here you will visit the spectacular Roman baths for which the city is named.
You will have free time to shop and purchase lunch (at your own expense) before you return to Portland.
