Dorset's Sherborne Castle has been a family home since 1617. The castle was commissioned by Sir Walter Raleigh back in 1594 and today still features many splendid rooms with a glorious variety of decorative styles from more than 400 years of English history
On a private guided tour, you will view the original kitchen dating back to the 14th century, along with the beautifully presented drawing room and library, splendid collections of art, furniture, and porcelain, family artifacts and archaeological 'finds' from medieval times. The stunning grounds and gardens are set around a fabulous 50-acre lake, magnificently landscaped by Capability Brown in 1753. Take time to stroll among the beautiful plantings of specimen trees, herbaceous borders and sweeping lawns.
Please note: Tour requires an approximately 15-minute walk from the coach parking area to reach the castle. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, sustained steep inclines, gravel, grass, and many steps. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Only the ground floor of the castle is accessible to wheelchair/scooter users. A photo slide show on the ground floor shows items on display in the inaccessible rooms. The 42-acre gardens are wheelchair- and scooter-accessible. Participants must be able to climb a few steps unassisted to board the transportation. Lake and parkland views are available from the more accessible areas closer to the castle. The garden paths have a smooth gravel surface and some seating benches. There is a large lake within the grounds; children must be accompanied by an adult and closely supervised; paddling and swimming are not allowed. Baby backpack carriers are not permitted within the castle; front sling carriers are allowed; small strollers may be allowed. Backpacks must be carried by hand. Photography is not permitted indoors. Drones and remote-control vehicles/devices are prohibited. The gardens may close at short notice. Terrain includes staircases, steps and slopes. Do not pick or eat from the gardens; some plants have sharp thorns and/or are poisonous.
