The Island of Portland has a long and rich history in the English Jurassic Coast, known primarily for its huge (still functioning) quarry. The stone from this quarry is used in a multitude of famous buildings including Buckingham Palace and St Paul's Cathedral.
Your first stop will be at the Olympic Rings Sculpture, established to commemorate the London 2012 Olympic Games, which was hosted in nearby Weymouth.
Continue to Portland Bill, with its striking Lighthouse at the southern tip of the island. Here your guide will take you around the outside, providing a brief history and orientation of the area (optional) before you will have some free time to enjoy the fascinating Portland Bill visitor center.
During the return journey you’ll drive by St Georges Church, this now disused church is being lovingly restored by volunteers.
Please note: Entrance inside the lighthouse is not included, guests may visit during their free time, payable direct; there are 155 steps to reach the top. The lighthouse is subject to closure in adverse weather conditions.
