Board your motorcoach and travel a short distance on the main highway before turning on to the country road for your scenic drive through Kent County. You’ll pass small villages and farms as you travel through the hamlets of Tenterden and Northiam. Drive down charming High Street where the buildings still have their original façades, dating from the 16th and 18th centuries.
Continuing to Rye, you’ll see old hop-drying houses that have been converted into homes. This fortified hilltop town has played a colorful role in history since the Middle Ages, and its charm has always drawn visitors to its shores.
Today, Rye is a center for boat building, fishing, and pottery making, as well as tourism. Your visit includes a brief stop at the Heritage Centre to view a model of the original medieval town. Enjoy free time to explore the old fortified city. Stroll down its narrow lanes, view its historic buildings or browse its shops and galleries. The church tower is a great vantage point to get your bearings. Climb the steps to the top of the tower for panoramic views of Southeast England.
En route back to the pier, drive to Romney Marsh and through the village of Hythe, the former haunt of smugglers, where the eerie, yet beautiful marsh is home to flood plains, meadows and wind-blown trees.
Please note: This tour is available only to in-transit guests whose cruise does not end in Dover. Wear non-slip flat soled shoes.
