Mount Stuart is perhaps Britain’s most astounding Victorian Gothic-Revival mansion. Home to the Stuarts of Bute, descendants of the Royal House of Stuart, this magnificent house sits proudly on the Isle of Bute -- an ancient stronghold of Scottish monarchs. The flamboyant house and its 300 acres of gardens reflect the artistic, religious and astrological interests of the third Marquess of Bute.
Mount Stuart’s gardens were founded upon an exquisite natural canvas provided by the island’s lush habitat and picturesque shoreline. The long process of shaping, nurturing and enhancing the landscape began around 1717 under the second Earl of Bute. Today, the gardens are amongst Europe’s finest, incorporating three hundred acres of vibrant landscaping, wilderness and woodland.
Enjoy an unguided, free-flow visit to the house and gardens during your time here, exploring at your leisure.
