During the Medieval era, Bornholm experienced radical changes. In the year 1259, the King lost his power over the island as the church took over and the foundation for a medieval battle was set.
Embark on a journey back in time with a specialized guide who will introduce you to this significant time in Danish history. Visit Hammershus, the site where the king held his prisoners as he tried to regain power over the church.
Continue along the coast to the medieval center of Bornholm and the impressive Medieval Center, an open-air museum depicting a typical medieval city. Here you can get a sense of how people lived during the medieval era. Costumed guides and actors dressed as solders, prisoners and peasants walk around the exhibition area and you will experience the life of the poor peasant, the rich farmer and his animals.
Continue your day of discovery to Østerlars, the biggest round church on the island, built in 1150. The church had two functions during the medieval era, not only as a church, but as a fortification that protected the locals.
After your medieval adventure, relax on a scenic drive though the lush countryside on route to the pier.
Please note: Participants must negotiate stairs and/or uneven surfaces and is therefore not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. At the Medieval Center guests can opt for the guided tour with the guide or explore on their own. If the church is closed due to religious services, an outside visit will be made.
