Visit one of Iceland's most remote places -- A unique opportunity only a few Icelanders have had the chance to do. Your journey begins with a drive to Thorarinsstadir for a look at an important archeological site complete with artifacts from the earliest years of Iceland's settlement. Continue your panoramic drive through a beautiful valley surrounded by tall mountains. The landscape is dotted with lonely farms abandoned long ago, reminding the traveler that this peaceful landscape was once home to a number of families.
Your destination is the Skalanes Heritage Center. Skalanes Nature Reserve covers 3,000 acres, and its purpose is to create a site where Iceland's environment and cultural history can be researched and interpreted, while maintaining a model for sustainable tourism. The area is home to about 47 different species of birds during the summertime. Eider ducks nest in great numbers around the pond. From the house at Skalanes, you will set out on a walk to the coastal cliffs at Skalanes over 600m high -- an optimal location to view the nesting seabirds.
Please note:
Wherever Included Experience tours are offered, guests are allowed to participate in only one included experience per call unless otherwise specified in the tour description. The order of sites visited may vary. Weather in Iceland is unpredictable and views are weather permitted. It is recommended to wear sturdy footwear with a non-skid sole and wear or bring waterproof outerwear. A customized coach with 4x4 wheels is used for this excursion; it crosses a small river to reach the site. On very rare occasions, the river has been impassable. For avid bird watchers, binoculars are recommended. Please be sure to book your included experience in advance as space may be limited on your specific choice.
