A short drive from St Helier, discover an ornithologist's delight -- the National Trust for Jersey Wetland Center. Spend a wonderful few hours watching the birds of Jersey.
You'll enter the Visitor Center by way of a tunnel through a sand dune mound. The tunnel opens out to offer views of the reed bed and pond. Step inside the visitor center, whose 16 viewing windows provide a fantastic perspective over the reserve and its wildlife. You are able to bird-watch without disturbing the resident waders and waterfowl. Sightings may include ducks, geese and waders, nesting lapwings, kestrels and barn owls, breeding warblers and buntings. A green roof covers the whole facility, enabling the center to blend in with its surroundings and double as a well-camouflaged hide.
St Ouen's Pond (La Mare au Seigneur) is the largest natural body of water on the Island. It has existed for centuries and is clearly marked on all the oldest maps of Jersey. The pond is surrounded by a vast area of reeds, supporting an abundance of rare flora, and adjoins wet meadows of exceptional botanical interest. The entire site was designated an Ecological Site of Special Interest in 2007. Make use of the range of interpretive panels and interactive exhibits to learn all about the wetlands and the fauna and anthropology of the La Mare au Seigneur Nature Reserve.
Take the scenic route back to St Helier with fantastic views of the coast, including the Corbière lighthouse, St Brelade, and Noirmont's German fortifications. You will pass through the lively and lovely fishing village of St Aubin en route back to St Helier.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
