Joined to the Isle of Lewis, Harris is an even more rugged and remote Hebridean island that beckons visitors who are curious about its legendary beaches and epic history. That history includes quite a bit of distilling, none of which was undertaken legally.
Your adventure takes you south from Stornoway to the Isle of Harris -- a landscape of hills and mountains and gorgeous coastal scenery. Here, you'll visit the Isle of Harris Distillery tucked into the shoreline of Loch an Siar. Established only in 2015, this award-winning distillery is the first legal distillery ever built on Harris. But its many bootlegging predecessors have ensured that there's plenty of knowledge to go around.
Known worldwide for its award-winning gin, the distillery has recently released its much-anticipated single malt whisky, The Hearach. Meet your host and take part in an in-depth, visual, sensory experience learning about the various stages of making The Hearach. You'll taste the New Make spirit and also enjoy a tasting of The Hearach whisky, released in September 2023. Your host will discuss the distillery's impact on the community and Harris' economy. Visit the production room where the distilling process happens. Questions? Bring them on!
Visit the blending hall to learn about casking and finishing, with a chance to see the team filling whisky bottles in the bottling room.
Next, enjoy some free time in Tarbert -- the island's main town. Be sure to browse in the Harris Tweed Shop -- the global epicenter of a brand name that enjoys worldwide renown that far outweighs its minimalist cottage-industry infrastructure.
Notes: Tour requires one hour of walking. Terrain includes inclines in Tarbet and a few steps at the distillery.
