Trondheim is one of Norway's oldest cities, founded in AD 997 on the River Nid estuary.
Walk along the river, savoring Trondheim's village-like atmosphere and its ancient and modern architecture that melds seamlessly with today's high-tech society.
You will pass Stiftsgården -- the Royal Residence -- and Market Square with the statue of the city's founder, Olav Tryggvason.
The walk continues to Nidaros Cathedral, where you step inside to appreciate its fantastic stained-glass windows.
Passing through the restored Old Town called Bakklandet, you'll admire the many picturesque wooden houses painted in vivid colors. Here, small cafés and simple pubs sit alongside exclusive, upscale restaurants. Time permitting, watch for the bicycle elevator -- a unique piece of fascinating technology that gives bike riders a welcome (and free!) push up a steep hill.
Toward the river, you'll see the old drawbridge, painted bright red, and head down the street along the riverbank with views over to the old warehouses on the other side.
Please note: Wear close-toe walking shoes. Dress warmly in layers; outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. Participants must be in good physical condition. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Tour requires walking approximately 3.5 miles.
