Standing on a hill overlooking the River Seine, the Château Gaillard was built during the 12th century by Richard the Lionheart, King of England and Duke of Normandy. Discover this manmade wonder and an equally charming medieval village that is still largely intact.
Transfer from the pier to Les Andelys, where you'll begin your day in rural France with an outside visit to Château Gaillard. The chateau was the capstone of the vast defense system restricting access to Normandy -- an impressive stronghold indeed.
At the quaint and pretty village of Lyons La Forêt, set on the River Lieure, walk with your guide to admire façades decked with half-timbering, bricks and colorful daub.
Please note: Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes.
