Depart the pier for a short transfer to the former medieval harbor of Almedalen, now a park offering wonderful views.
Set out on foot with your guide passing the oldest remaining structure in Visby, the Powder Tower, which provided protection for the harbor during the Middle Ages. It earned its nickname in the 18th century when the Swedish state stored gunpowder in the tower.
Continue to the Botanic Gardens, showcasing a broad variety of exotic trees, shrubs, flowerbeds and roses. Visby's mild winters allow such specimens as almond trees, magnolias and acacias to thrive here.
Travel along the outskirts of the wall to Galgberget, or Gallows Hill, whose grisly name speaks for itself.
Your journey continues through the lush Gotland countryside to Gannarve, a burial site from the Iron Age where you will stop for photos.
Stop briefly in the old fishing village of Kronvalls and at one of the numerous medieval churches found throughout the island. Step inside and admire the charming interior with great rural paintings and medieval architecture.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
Arriving back in Visby, set off with your guide on a walking tour by crossing the moat that surrounds the medieval town wall and passing through the Dalmans Gate. Follow the narrow alleyways past picturesque old houses flanked by flowers. Pause at the viewpoint above St Mary’s Cathedral and take in the magnificent views across the Baltic Sea before taking a short transfer back to the pier.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour requires walking on cobblestones and other uneven surfaces. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations.
