Visit Dettifoss -- Iceland's greatest and most majestic waterfall.
This journey takes you along paved, partly-gravel and rocky roads. With sprawling, open landscape as far as the eye can see, you might get the impression there is not much here except extreme isolation. But all of a sudden, Dettifoss comes into view -- an amazing roar of water thundering through the Jökulsárgljúfur canyons and dropping into the Jökulsá á Fjöllum glacial river.
Dettifoss waterfall, located in Vatnajökull National Park, is reputedly the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe. It is 150 feet tall and 320 feet wide. The river it feeds flows northwards from the glacial cap of Vatnajökull, ending its course in the great canyon of Jökulsárgljúfur and opening into Oxarfjordur Bay.
Icelanders claim this is a favorite site -- a self-made tribute to the force of nature. The view of the waterfall, the cliffs and canyon is stunning and is completely unobstructed by boardwalks and viewing platforms -- just a massive waterfall in its natural environment.
Drive back to Vopnafjörður with some stunning scenic sights to contemplate.
Please note: Parents traveling with children under the age of 3 must rent a child's car seat from the tour operator. You cannot use your USA car/booster seats as these do not meet Icelandic requirements. Please see the Destinations Manager on board. The last piece of road leading to the waterfall is very rocky and bumpy. Guests who are prone to motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication. Surfaces underfoot are grass/mud/gravel and there are uneven pathways throughout. The walk leading down to the waterfall is sandy and rocky and there is no particular path to walk on as this is a completely untouched area. Suitable for guests with mobility limitations with a companion to assist; however, the main attractions are not easily accessed by guests using a walking aid. Wear sturdy, non-skid walking shoes. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf.
