Mont-Saint-Michel and its Bay
"Perched on a rocky islet in the midst of vast sandbanks exposed to powerful tides between Normandy and Brittany stand the 'Wonder of the West', a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the archangel St Michael, and the village that grew up in the shadow of its great walls. Built between the 11th and 16th centuries, the abbey is a technical and artistic tour de force, having had to adapt to the problems posed by this unique natural site."
Victor Hugo said that , Brittany's most famous landmark, "…is to the ocean what the Cheops Pyramid is to the desert… a masterpiece of nature and art." You'll drive 60 minutes from Saint Malo to Mont Saint Michel to see for yourself this spectacular fusion of construction and erosion -- an enduring monument to the golden age of Norman power and influence.Victor Hugo said that , Brittany's most famous landmark, "…is to the ocean what the Cheops Pyramid is to the desert… a masterpiece of nature and art." You'll drive 60 minutes from Saint Malo to Mont Saint Michel to see for yourself this spectacular fusion of construction and erosion -- an enduring monument to the golden age of Norman power and influence. You will approach Mont St Michel from the mainland by way of a five-mile long causeway. After a transfer and walk to the shuttle bus, and the shuttle ride itself, you will explore Mont Saint Michel on foot. Your guide will lead you through the narrow streets of the medieval village and up the steep path to the abbey. The abbey perches on the summit of an immense granite precipice, 250 feet above the sea. Eye-popping views await at every juncture.
You will have free time to stroll among the labyrinth of streets, browse in the shops, and follow in the footsteps of the hundreds of thousands of ancient and modern pilgrims who have visited here.
Return to the pier along the coastal road, passing small towns and traditional fishing harbors.
Please note: Modest attire is required; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts and capri-length pants are not allowed. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Flash photography is not permitted. The site is served by a shuttle bus (capacity of 60 standing guests and 25 seated guests). It is not possible to reserve the shuttle bus; there may be a wait and participants may take different shuttles. The ride lasts about six minutes and the drop-off point is 400 yards away from the entrance to the village. The traditional climb up the hill to the abbey takes about 30 minutes on foot. Tour requires walking over cobblestone surfaces, steep ascents, and numerous stairs.
