Depart the pier for an approximately 1.75-hour panoramic drive to Sierpe, unfolding like a scenic tapestry to reveal the lush landscapes of Costa Rica. Winding roads lead you past dense rainforests, picturesque coastal vistas, and charming rural communities.
In Sierpe -- home to the Finca 6 UNESCO World Heritage Site -- you'll visit one of four archaeological collections of stone spheres. More than 300 giant stone spheres have been excavated here and are believed to date back to the pre-Columbian period (AD 500-1500). Archeologists suggest that the spheres are aligned with the stars and served as monumental compasses; however, you could be forgiven for thinking that giants playing a game of marbles wandered off after wearying of their play, simply leaving the marbles behind. Indeed, local lore claims that the spheres were the playthings of the gods who controlled the weather. The truth remains a mystery and may be forever unknown. Visit the fascinating site and its museum, showcasing artifacts found nearby.
Replenish with a savory Costa Rican lunch before returning to the pier.
