This eco-adventure celebrates the stunning Tarcoles River, located near Carara National Park -- an area known for its mangrove forests, including tea, black, red and white mangroves. Ideal for those who prize nature, it is a pristine environment uninhibited by anything but its own biodiversity.
Enjoy a leisurely ride along scenic coastal and country roads, past quaint towns and villages, to the Jungle Crocodile Safari dock on the Tarcoles River, whose mangrove forest shelters one of the Americas' largest populations of crocodiles. More than 50 species of bird live here, including the endangered scarlet macaw, mangrove cuckoo, mangrove hummingbirds, mangrove vireo, Panama flycatchers, herons and egrets. The Tárcoles River mouth is considered one of the richest sites for sea- and shorebird resting during the October-April migration period.
The riverbank is home to the large local crocodile colony, with some crocs reaching lengths of nearly ten feet. Iguanas and Jesus Christ lizards are easily seen looking for food in this rich habitat. This thrilling yet serene adventure offers a chance to scout for all of these and other endemic species.
Head back to Puntarenas, pausing en route to visit El Jardín Market. Browse, purchase souvenirs, sample delicious tropical fruit, or enjoy a cup of freshly-brewed Costa Rican coffee as marimba music plays.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
