Journey approximately 45 minutes to the ancient Mayan ruins of Izapa. From its beginnings as a small village, around 1500 BC, Izapa grew into the region's most influential cultural and commercial center with a population of up to 10,000 people at the height of its influence, between 60 BC and AD 100. Many believe it may be the site of the origin of the sacred Mayan Calendar.
Here, you'll see the famous Mayan Tree of Life stone -- an important icon of the Mayan story of creation.
Discover the culturally-diverse city of Tapachula, whose history is based in Maya and Mestizo heritage but also shows Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese and French influences.
Follow your guide on a short walking tour about the Town Square. You'll have free time for shopping at some artisan shops selling leather goods and ceramics.
Finally, visit the City Museum to view pictures and artifacts relating to the history of Tapachula. Watch some Mayan dances to get a feel for this ancient culture.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Bring insect repellent.
