Today you will travel through the lowlands and into the highlands of Guatemala to visit the Maya archaeological site of Iximche. A 2.5-hour drive through Guatemala's scenic countryside brings you to this late post-Classic dig in the western highlands.
Iximche was the capital of the Kaqchikel Maya Kingdom from AD 1470 until 1524 when it was abandoned after the Conquistadores defeated the Maya. Tour the site, as your guide provides you with relevant information about the structures and the importance of the Mayan Calendar and the so-called 2012 end-of-the-world phenomenon.
Local Mayan shamans say that Iximche is a site of great universal energy. You might be lucky enough to also witness, from a distance, an authentic Mayan ritual. These are performed regularly on the site, although not specifically for visitors nor to a specific timetable.
A nearby local restaurant serves a much-deserved lunch before you head back to the pier in Quetzal.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Bring insect repellent. Elevation is 7,000 feet above sea level; bring a jacket. Have a hearty breakfast and consider bringing a snack, as no food is available on tour.
