From Santana Harbor you will visit the highlights and environs of Macapá, located on the north bank at the mouth of the Amazon River. Begin with a drive to the Marco Zero Monument, which marks the passage of the equator through the city of Macapá. Featuring art displays and a gift shop, the monument offers the opportunity to take a picture standing with one foot on each side of the equator—being in the northern and southern hemispheres at the same time. São José Fort sits at the entrance to the city. Completed in 1782 after 18 years of labor by natives and slaves, the fort is one of the best-preserved military monuments in Brazil.
At the Casa do Artesão (the Artisan’s House), indigenous art and ceramics coated in manganese can be purchased as souvenirs. The beauty of indigenous artifacts can be seen in the weapons made from local wood, and in the variety of utensils and ornaments made with the teeth and bones of animals, feathers of birds, seeds and natural fibers.
Visit the Sacaca Museum, situated in a five-acre area. The museum offers visitors the opportunity to experience the different realities of the traditional Amazon communities, including the Maracá archaeological site, the riparian house, the cashew farmers’ house, the Marabaixo monument, the flour mill, the Waiãpi house, the ethnicities park and Sacaca Square.
