The Arenillas Ecological Reserve is characterized by two main ecosystems -- dry forest and bushland. With a high level of biodiversity, the region is home to numerous endemic species found only in the southern equatorial dry forest.
This morning, set off towards the Cantón Arenillas, where the Ecological Reserve is located. A guided two-hour walk gives you a chance to observe one of the last remnants of dry forest in the southern part of Ecuador. The dry forest biome is important because the flora and fauna are forced to develop specific strategies and adaptations for survival. One such strategy, adopted by the trees, is that they lose their leaves during the dry season to minimize their need for water. Among the species that use this approach are the Guayacán, kapok and rosewood. Other trees such as carob or muyuyo have small leaves for the same reason. In addition, the roots of these trees dig deep into the earth in search of water.
After the walk, head to the nearby Hillary Nature Resort & Spa for a delicious lunch. The restaurant offers spectacular views over the countryside, and your lunch consists of a variety of typical and tasty dishes showcasing local cuisine and seafood.
Return to the pier after lunch.
Please note: Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes.
