The Puyango Petrified Forest is home to the largest known area of exposed petrified wood in South America. It lies southeast of the town of Puyango, near Ecuador's border with Peru.
A panoramic drive delivers you to your destination. Leave the transportation here and explore on foot with your guide.
Most of the petrified wood here is from the Araucaria family — a group of trees that is not often fossilized. In addition to the petrified trees, many marine fossils are visible — evidence that this area was once under the sea. The fossils and petrified trees in Puyango range from 60 million to 500 million years old. Perhaps not surprisingly, Puyango is considered one of the most important petrified forests in the world.
Keep an eye out also for live fauna, as more than 130 different bird species make their home here, along with numerous equally beautiful butterfly species. There are also spiders, termite hills, dragonflies, and kapok and ceiba trees.
After a memorable and interesting walk, head to the nearby Hillary Nature Resort & Spa for a delicious lunch showcasing local cuisine and seafood. The restaurant offers spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. Return to the pier afterward.
Please note: Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, dirt, grass, roots, rocks, and steps. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, etc) cannot be accommodated on the transportation.
