The Puyango Petrified Forest is home to the largest known area of exposed petrified wood in South America. From the port, you'll drive southeast to the town of Puyango, near Ecuador's border with Peru.
Reaching your destination, explore on foot with your guide. The majority of the petrified wood is from the Araucarias family -- a tree that is not often fossilized. In addition to the petrified trees, many marine fossils are visible -- evidence that this area was once under the sea. The fossils and petrified trees in Puyango range from 60 million to 500 million years old. Perhaps not surprisingly, Puyango is considered one of the most important petrified forests in the world.
Keep an eye out also for fauna from the present day, as there are more than 130 different types of bird species to be found here, along with numerous equally beautiful butterfly species. There are also spiders, termite hills and dragonflies. Some of the living trees that are found here are the kapok and ceiba trees.
After your memorable and very interesting walk, head to the nearby Hillary Nature Resort & Spa for a delicious lunch. The restaurant here offers spectacular views over the countryside, and your lunch consists of a variety of typical and tasty dishes showcasing local cuisine and seafood. Return to the pier after lunch.
Please note: Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes.
