Explore on foot the tremendous diversity of Ponta Delgada and the Azores, beginning with a transfer to the lush Furnas Valley.
Set out on easy, unpaved roads and trails, passing through dense and lush vegetation. Along the way, you will stop at beautiful viewpoints. The scent of sulfur mingles with the perfume of flowers, and the cold, transparent waters of the streams mix with boiling water made golden by the iron in the water.
Your destination is the Furnas Hot Springs — one of the richest hydrological areas in Europe, with 22 thermal springs. The land surrounding Furnas Lake, where farms and pastures predominate, is bordered by the great slopes of the volcanic crater. Fields are edged with Japanese red cedars, hydrangeas, and kahiki ginger. Furnas Hot Springs is an area of diverse volcanic activity where water and mud geysers spout and boil. This is where the famous Cozido Furnas is cooked for six hours in the hot volcanic soil. Relax for a few minutes and enjoy a taste of a local sweet bread called bolos levedos, along with a local soft drink made of passionfruit.
