As you walk the well-groomed trail, located only few minutes walking distance from the pier, your guide will introduce you to Dr. Grenfell, a hero of this region, who had a lifelong commitment to the people of the area. In 1882, he pledged to "work on a coast that was ice blocked and inaccessible for several months of the year."
Dr. Grenfell was devoted to improving the lives of local families as he practiced medicine, built hospitals, established schools and orphanages, and when not working on the coast, travelled to the UK and North America looking for support and labor. At the Grenfell House Museum, the Grenfell family’s home during their time in Newfoundland, be transported back in time as you explore the different rooms and see furniture, art and other various items belonging to the family.
Next visit the Grenfell Interpretation Center, dedicated to preserving and showcasing Dr. Grenfell’s legacy in the region through interpretive panels and displays. Don’t miss visiting Grenfell Handicrafts Gift Shop to browse for locally produced souvenirs and mementos of your time in St. Anthony.
Finally, drop by the Rotunda and be entertained with local stories and legends from your local tour guide before walking back to the pier.
Please note: This is a moderate hike for guests who are physically fit. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the day’s conditions.
