World War II aficionados and those whose relatives fought here will appreciate this chance to visit the Western Battlefield sites relating to the Battle of Guadalcanal.
There are some significant World War II points of interest here on the island of Guadalcanal, whose native name is Isatabu.
Begin with a visit to the Skyline Memorial, where the US Navy commemorates its involvement and honors its fallen at anniversary ceremonies held annually.
You will also see the Jacob Vouza Monument, honouring a local man who played a significant role in the victory of the Americans and Allies over the Japanese in the Battle of Guadalcanal.
Continue to the Outdoor Vilu Museum. A variety of battle-weary war relics lie in state here, left over from both the Japanese and American campaigns.
Returning to Honiara, you will stop at Mbonege to see the remnants of the Hirokawa Maru -- one of the 11 Japanese transport convoys that was attacked on its way to Honiara.
