Uncover the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of Hawaii’s North Kohala region on this immersive, off-the-beaten-path adventure. From storied plantations to secluded waterfalls, this tour offers a powerful look at the role water has played in shaping both the land and the legacy of King Kamehameha I.
Your day begins with a scenic drive across the diverse landscapes of the Big Island — from rugged lava fields to the verdant hills of North Kohala. Pass through the charming towns of Hawi and Kapa’au before venturing behind locked gates in a 4x4 touring vehicle. With an expert naturalist guide leading the way, you’ll access a private trail few visitors ever see.
On foot, follow a lush, stream-fed trail dotted with cascading waterfalls and historic taro terraces. Along the way, your guide will illuminate North Kohala’s unique ecology and share stories from Hawaii’s past, including the remarkable construction of the 22-mile Kohala Ditch — a marvel of early 20th-century irrigation. Cool off with a swim in a pristine mountain stream, surrounded by towering trees and tranquil falls — a perfect pause in paradise.
After your hike, relax and recharge with a premium picnic lunch served at a private cliffside overlook. Soak in sweeping views from Pololu to Waipio Valley as you enjoy gourmet fare in a breathtaking setting.
Return to the ship feeling refreshed, inspired, and connected to the spirit of Kohala — a place where history flows as abundantly as the streams.
