Get an insider’s perspective of Lome, Togo’s culturally rich and history-packed capital. Lome is the only African city which was a colonized by the Germans, British and French. It is also one of the few capitals in the world bordering with another nation.
Your experience will start at Assigame, the capital’s largest marketplace, famous for its Nana Benz women who control the market of expensive cloth coming from Europe and sold all over West Africa. These industrious women got their name because they were so wealthy that they were the only ones that could afford Mercedes Benz vehicles. The name is synonymous with freedom, ingenuity, pride and courage needed to succeed in this competitive market.
Continue to Independence Square where you will recount the struggle for independence from French colonial rule. Visit the National Museum to explore historical collections from across the country.
After an authentic lunch with local cuisine, visit the famous Vodoun market of Akodessewa where you will discover an eclectic assortment of all the necessary ingredients for love potions and magical concoctions. This is the first and largest Vodoun market in Africa and it is where "Bokonons", Vodoun priests and traditional medicine men shop.
End the day at the art village where you can shop for souvenirs from throughout Togo.
Please note:
Not recommended for guests who suffer from claustrophobia as the markets can be very crowded. The Vodoun market sells a variety of items that some guests may find disturbing. Please consider this prior to booking. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen. Bring a hat.
