Head to the Takachiho Shrine as your tour guide explains the mythical significance of the area. You'll pause to enjoy a Japanese-style lunch en route.
At the Takachiho Shrine, watch a special Kagura dance performance. The shrine was founded approximately 1,900 years ago during the reign of Emperor Suinin. It serves as the head shrine for the 88 shrines of Takachiho — the deity of agriculture, exorcism, and matchmaking. Takachiho Kagura is usually an evening performance but, today, it's your privilege to enjoy these authentic dances, designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, in daylight hours.
Please note: Travel time is approximately 1¼ hours each way. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars. You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse.
