By the end of this tour, you'll dream of giving up city life for the serenity of cranberry farming or becoming a jewelry maker with the beauty of Nanaimo as inspiration. Discover why the readers of Condé Nast Traveler + Leisure magazines consistently rank Vancouver Island among the best island destinations in the world.
It's a short drive through rolling hills and expansive farmlands to a Vancouver Island cranberry farm. Local First Nations peoples once used cranberries for food, dyes, and medicine. Today, this tart fruit is British Columbia's largest berry crop, with about 82 million pounds produced annually. Sample a non-alcoholic cranberry beverage and tour the farm to learn how cranberries are wet-harvested from water-filled bogs. Famous for its cranberry preserves, the farm proudly produces 30+ kinds of cranberry confections, salsas, chutneys and more.
Return to Nanaimo for an orientation drive and a self-guided gallery walk through the city's charming heritage district. The downtown core, with its well-tended collection of heritage buildings, is the perfect place to explore on foot. Among the prized 19th-century buildings, browse in craft, jewelry and art galleries. Don't miss a chance to purchase the local favorite -- a Nanaimo Bar (at your own expense). This creamy, chocolatey no-bake slice is Canada's most famous dessert.
Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their own way back to the ship.
Please note: Dress warmly in layered clothing with gloves, a scarf, and a hat; outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. Terrain includes uneven surfaces, gravel paths, and cobblestones. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Bring valid photo ID to sample the cranberry cider. Minimum age to drink alcohol is 19 years, with a companion aged 21 years or older. The gallery walk covers 900 to 1200 yards.
