Step back in time on a leisurely heritage walk through downtown Nanaimo. Located on a paradise island with mountain views, emerald forests and a stunning waterfront, the Old Quarter offers up history, charm, and the sweetest of treats -- the world-famous Nanaimo Bar.
The downtown core, with its well-tended collection of heritage buildings, is the perfect place to explore on foot. Bordered by Selby, Franklin, Fitzwilliam and Wallace streets, this colorful district invites you to stretch your legs and your imagination. Picture what life was like here from the late 1800s to the early 1900s when the imposing Saint Andrew's United Church, with its tall bell tower and picturesque roofline, called the faithful to worship. Imagine the scenes of warmth and hospitality at the Occidental Hotel (1887), dubbed "the first and the last" for its westernmost location.
A leisurely stroll along the waterfront leads to the historic Bastion -- a former Hudson's Bay Company outpost and the last standing fort in Canada.
The friendly staff at the Nanaimo District Museum warmly welcome you. Follow them on an interactive journey to get acquainted with the curious objects used in everyday living, including textiles, basketry, trade items, and tools used for fishing by the early Snunéymuxw First Nation.
Finally, it's time to sample the triple-layered sweet treat known as the Nanaimo Bar -- one bite and you're hooked!
Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their own way back to the ship.
