Gyeongju is known as the Museum without Walls, as it was once the capital of the Shilla Kingdom. It blossomed into a major cultural center after the Shilla Dynasty unified the Korean Peninsula in AD 676.
Today, Gyeongju is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit Tumuli Park -- home to some twenty Shilla Dynasty royal tombs. Your guide will show you the colorful Flying Horse Tomb. It was excavated in 1973 and dates back to the 5th century.
The National Museum is a treasure trove of Korean cultural artifacts, including gold crowns, Buddhist relics and prehistoric stone instruments. You'll see the Divine Bell of King Songdok -- a bronze bell that stands 11 feet tall and weighs 23 tons.
Savor Hanjeongsik, a lunch consisting of the finest Korean delicacies alongside savory side dishes.
You will find the serene Bulguksa Temple perched on the slopes of Mt Tohamsan -- a quiet oasis that is a superb example of Shilla architecture and devotion to Buddhism. Your guide leads you among a collection of wooden buildings (many of them rebuilt many times), stone bridges, stairways and pagodas (all original). Stroll through the temple grounds before the journey back to the pier.
