This tour will introduce you to the legends and folklore of historic Raiatea (the Sacred Island) with a voyage into Polynesia's past.
Setting out by island-style bus, you'll pass through the town of Uturoa, around the Bay of Faaroa and through the island's crater.
Visit the Taputapuatea Marae -- Raiatea's most famous landmark. The marae is an open-air temple comprised of seven sacred sites built of stone and coral and is dedicated to Oro -- the bloodthirsty god of war who demanded human sacrifice.
Discover the tropical plants, flowers and trees that contribute to the lush beauty of the island, and your guide will point out local fruits and flowers in various stages of growth.
Please note:
This tour is operated using basic island-style le truck buses. The transportation is not air-conditioned or equipped with a PA system. Guides accompany the tour, but it is not always possible to hear them as the truck is noisy and winds along the natural terrain of the island. The bench seating is not cushioned and provides minimal back support. The guides may switch buses for the return drive. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here, and you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties your guide may encounter and with any operational surprises that may crop up.
