Discover the highlights of Matsushima — a coastal gem that offers a harmonious blend of cultural heritage and picturesque landscapes. On this tour by coach and on foot, you'll explore three top landmarks.
Sit back and enjoy a ride through the scenic countryside to Matsushima, where you'll visit Entsuin Temple. Built in 1646 and ornately decorated with gold leaf and intricate paintings, the temple also boasts a rose garden. There is a painting depicting the oldest Western rose in Japan. This painting features a gold leaf background with three colors: white, red, and green. It is said that because it uses materials such as verdigris and coral, it will never permanently change color. This is a highly unusual feature for a Buddhist temple.
From here, walk to the neighboring Zuiganji Temple, heralded as one of the most important Zen Buddhist temples in northern Japan. Your visit includes admission to both the temple grounds and the adjacent Zuiganji Treasure Museum.
Then it's on to Godaido, a small temple hall originally built in AD 807 on an islet next to the pier. This is an iconic symbol of Matsushima, known for its architectural design. It also serves as an observation point to appreciate the breathtaking views of the surrounding islands.
Finally, relax on the ride back to the pier.
Please note: Tour requires walking approximately 15 minutes from the coach parking area to Godaido, with additional walking and standing at the site. Terrain includes uneven ground, steps, inclines and gravel. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. You must remove your shoes or more location(s). Photography is not allowed at Zuiganji Temple. Venue capacity is limited; the group may be split to accommodate inside visits. Bring local currency, as some vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Tour sequence may vary. The roses may or may not be blooming during your visit. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse.
