If you’ve always wanted to visit one of New Zealand's top ten coastal defense heritage sites, this guided walk around Godley Head Crater Rim is an unmissable experience. Join us on a guided hike around Godley Head, offering some of Canterbury’s most spectacular coastal views. This scenic adventure showcases the rugged Pacific coastline, sweeping vistas across Pegasus Bay to the Southern Alps, and the picturesque Lyttelton Harbour, along with wide expanses of the Pacific Ocean.
Your journey begins with a short van ride from Lyttelton Port to Godley Head, where you’ll be equipped with a light day bag, a water bottle, and walking sticks. As you hike, discover the area’s rich history, including WWII coastal defence sites and Robert Falcon Scott’s early Antarctic exploration connection at Scott’s Cabin, one of the best viewpoints in the region.
Continue along the coastal track to explore the Taylor Battery, a WWII defence site, and take in more stunning views. You’ll also have the chance to experience the recently added art of Wongi Wilson, whose powerful pieces celebrate the cultural heritage and natural beauty of the region. His artwork is integrated into the landscape, offering a unique perspective on both the environment and the history of the area.
The hike ends with a gentle uphill walk back to the car park, offering breathtaking views of Lyttelton Harbour. From there, your guide will return you to Lyttelton Port, concluding a day of history, nature, and unforgettable scenery.
