The Tea Route is a rich gastronomic and cultural journey showcasing the various facets of traditional and colonial Mauritius.
Your tour starts with a visit to Domain Aubineaux—one of the few remaining colonial mansions of the 19th century. It is located in the highlands and an on-site guide will offer you a cultural tour of the house, which was built in 1872. You will discover furniture dating from the East India Company and a fine collection of period photographs. Visit the stables, which have been converted to a meeting room, and take a moment to shop at the distillery of essential oils.
After a break in the tea lounge, enjoy the floral park and visit the garden of camphor. Exotic plants and endemic trees thrive here.
Continue by coach to Bois Cheri and the tea factory, where you will learn about the various stages of production and visit the tea museum.
Enjoy a tea tasting, along with local delicacies, in a cottage with panoramic views of the south of the island.
Travel a few miles north of Souillac to the Rivière des Anguilles. At St Aubin, you will find the colonial house built in 1819—once the residence of the director of the sugar estate.
It is now a table d’hôte restaurant where lunch will be served. The restaurant offers a typically Mauritian lunch. The property harvests sugar cane for sugar and rum production, and a visit to the distillery with rum tasting is included.
Last stop is At La Maison de la Vanille, you will discover the long process of transforming vanilla orchids into vanilla essence.
