Lofthellir, a 3500 year old lava cave, is a world of ice and darkness. Explore this mystical underground world -- a place that boasts the greatest natural ice sculptures currently known in an Icelandic lava cave.
Leaving Akureyri, you will head towards the Lake Myvatn area where you will continue your drive along a rugged track to the unique volcano Hverfell.
After a short 30 minute walk across a lava field, you will reach the Lofthellir Lava Cave. Inside the cave, you will find natural ice sculptures of all shapes and sizes, formed by dripping water for thousands of years. This unique underworld will leave you in awe.
On your return, you will make a short stop in the village of Reykjahlíd and have an opportunity to take photos at the powerful Godafoss Waterfall.
Please note: The weather in Iceland is very unpredictable; it is vital to wear sturdy, non-skid footwear -- preferably sturdy hiking shoes, and warm, waterproof outerwear. This tour is not recommended for guests with mobility limitations or claustrophobia. Helmet, headlights and studded crampons are provided. Lake Myvatn is known for its tiny midget flies during the summers. They are harmless, but can be bothersome. It is recommended to bring a face net while visiting the Lake Myvatn area.
