Fiordo de las Montañas is a long, narrow fjord that stretches more than 35 miles north, and ends in a glacially-carved valley at the south end of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.
A huge section of this part of the coastline of Patagonia, including this fjord, is a part of Kawésqar National Park—a protected area of over 7 million acres. The park's name is in honor of the Kawésqar who inhabited this region and whose culture is now nearly almost extinct.
The National Park is home to the endangered huemul (South Andean deer) and the culpeo fox, as well as a variety of land and sea birds, including hummingbirds and potentially several species of rayadito. Dolphins, sea lions, and two species of otter can be found in its waters.
