Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea
"The site consists of an exceptional urban setting encompassing the key natural elements that have shaped the development of the city: from the highest points of the Tijuca National Park’s mountains down to the sea. They also include the Botanical Gardens, Corcovado Mountain with its celebrated statue of Christ, and the hills around Guanabara Bay, including the designed landscapes along Copacabana Bay which have contributed to the outdoor living culture of this spectacular city."
Travel through the streets of Rio's Little Africa district to learn the behind-the-scenes secrets of Carnival. The Grande Rio Samba School opens its doors to you today to showcase the colorful and innovative universe of Mardi Gras -- the world's biggest party.
Rio de Janeiro's Carnival (Mardi Gras) attracts people from all the corners of Brazil and the world. There are more than 90 samba schools with thousands of professionals involved in working on the Carnival project every year -- musicians, choreographers, dancers, artisans, samba masters and producers.
The Pimpolhos of Grande Rio is a samba school for young people -- a non-governmental organization whose mission is to promote social interaction and education through the culture of Carnival. Your tour today is part of a pillar of socioeconomic sustainability that ensures the continuation of future Carnivals.
Head to Samba City and visit the warehouse where floats are made, costumes are stored, the creative process is launched, and Carnival production takes place behind the scenes.
After your tour, feel free to try on some Carnival costumes for photos and savor the taste the Caipirinha -- a typical Brazilian drink made with cachaça sugarcane liquor, lemons and sugar.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. There are stairs to negotiate at the warehouse.
